Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
